Happy Birthday Judy. We left Yellowstone at 8 am and drove north on route 287.We passed the Madison Canyon earthquake area(similar to Frank's slide).Maroon- colored mountains andBlack Angus cattle dotted the golden wheatfields along the Missouri River. We turned on I-15 at Helena, Montana and drove north (definitely the priaries) to the USA-Canadian border at 3:30 pm .No problem at customs. We were Alberta bound. We stopped for dinner in Claresholm, Alberta. We hit construction and had to detour at Okotoks. After a blinding sunset and deer on the road, we arrived at Quirk Creek Campground at 8:10 pm. A very long day--tired but safe and sound. Our friends Graham,Jean,Terryand Judy were there to welcome us back. We sat around a roaring campfire until midnight.
September 15th
A beautiful fall morning with all the trees turning golden. Jean made breakfast for us. Derek, Carol and Liam arrived at 2 pm. Liam looks so grown up--walking and talking in his own language. What a sweetheart!!! I think he remembers us. It is so good to see them again.
Ralph and I were invited (free) for the Quirk Creek BBQ--steak and lobsters. Great BBQ and beautiful day 25 Deg. C. We saw alot of Ralph's former co-workers. We had another campfire that night. Derek,Carol and Liam stayed the night with us.
September 16th
Liam woke up around 6am. Lovely day again. Ralph made omelets for everyone (11 of us). We enjoyed the morning and afternoon at Quirk Creek. We traveled 22,000 kilometers (Ralph may apply for a job as a long haul truck driver with me as his sidekick--just kidding). What a trip!! What a experience!! So many memories!! Beautiful people and places !! Thanks to our families and friends for entertaining us,tuning into our blog,e-mailing and phoning us. It's been a special time for Ralph and I.Keep in touch. South Dakota--Wyoming--Montana-----Sept. 10 to 13th
Sept. 1oth
Cool night and morning 2 Deg. C. Some frost and snow on the ground in am. Clear blue skies.
We traveled north out of the Black Hills of S.D. and then west on I-90 to Wyoming. Driving through Wyoming the hills were red and the prairie covered with sage brush. We saw herds of antelope, oil pumpers,open- pit coal mines and lots of cattle and horse ranches. We crossed into the Big Sky Country of Montana-rolling hills and Big Horn Mountains to the west. We stopped at Little Big Horn Battlefield Memorial(Custer's Last Stand)1 hour west of Billings. After 8 hours of driving we were ready to settle in at Billings KOA(America's first KOA)located on the Yellowstone River. Wow! what a set-up--patio and swing set, fireplace on a cement pad. Deer and peacocks wondered throughout the beautiful campground. Up to 24 Deg. C. today.
Sept 11 th
We traveled west on I-90 along the Yellowstone River through fertile valleys. The different mountain ranges were mostly brown sweetgrass dotted with shrubs and pine trees. Ranch country. Turned south at Bozeman and arrived in West Yellowstone KOA. Another deluxe campsite. Indoor pool and hot tub. After settling in we drove 6 miles to the town of West Yellowstone for groceries. It is a quaint resort town of saloons, gift shops and restaurants. 27 Deg. C.
Sept 12th
On the road at 9am to see the Lower Loop of Yellowstone National Park(110 miles with numerous stops). Yellowstone is primarily in Wyoming. Buffalo and elk were everywhere. Extremely scenic. Geysers, fountains, volcanoes and mud pots spouting out of the earth--colorful,boiling,steaming,bubbling,gushing and roaring--with such names as Dragons Den,Biscuit Basin,Fountain Paintpots,Prismatic Spring and of course Old Faithful. We were just in time to see 180 foot Old Faithful erupt. Impressive!! We had lunch and shopped at the huge complex.
We drove along Yellowstone Lake ,valleys, mountains and rivers. We stopped at several water falls. What a terrific day!
Another warm day.25 degrees C
Sept. 13th--Happy Birthday ,Ralph
We drove the Upper Loop of Yellowstone(98 miles)for another 7-8 hours. The roads were more winding and steeper through mountains and plateaus. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone plunges down 1000 feet. The canyon walls have beautiful colors created from hot water flowing over volcanic rock. We saw more geysers, beautiful waterfalls, the Petrified Tree, and Mammoth Hot Springs. These spectacular terraces are formed by travetime(calcium carbonate)over a thermal area with hot springs. We passed the Obsidian Cliff(volcanic glass). Lots of stopping ,walking and climbing. We saw more elk, bison and even a black bear today. We had Ralph's birthday dinner at a resturant in West Yellowstone(great prime rib and birthday cake).

Sept 6th
We left Illinois, the Land of Lincoln, after 1.5 hours driving west on I-80. We crossed the great Mississippi into Davenport ,Iowa. Lots of rolling hills with cornfields, silos and grazing cattle.
The USA rest areas are large, clean and have Wi-Fi internet. Outside the city of DesMoines,Iowa is John Wayne's birth place Winterset and the Bridges of Madison County. We turned north on Route 29 outside Omaha,Nebraska and traveled north along the Missouri River. After 8 hours of driving we were happy to stop at Onawa/Blue Lake KOA. We camped right beside beautiful Blue Lake. It was hot and humid 30 Deg. C. About 7 pm we had a big rain storm with some lightning. (lasted about 1 hour).
Sept 7th
Overcast and a bit windy 19 Deg. C. We crossed the Missouri River at Sioux City into South Dakota travelling north on Rt.29. We saw paddle wheel river boats on the Missouri River. Blue skies over this prairie country. At Sioux Falls we turned west on I-90. The flat prairie fields were covered in canola, sun flower, etc. crops. Cowboy country with lots of cattle. We changed to Mountain Standard Time near the Badlands National Park(similar to Drumheller). As we approached the Black Hills of South Dakota we entered the town of Wall (literally through a granite wall). We drove through Rapid City with bronzed statues of past USA presidents at the street corners. The Black Hills are covered with Ponderosa Pines appearing black at a distance. After driving 9 hours we arrived tired at the luxurious Mount Rushmore/Hill City KOA(5400 ft elevation)with a lodge, cabins, restaurant, pub, pools, etc. We got a deluxe campsite with cable tv,paved pad, free internet and patio set. Sept 8th
We had good pancakes at the Ponderosa Resaurant before driving to the Crazy Horse Monument. The world's largest mountain carving is a work in progress started 50 years ago dedicated to the Native American People. Crazy Horse's face is 9 stories high and the horse's head will be 22 stories high. Impressive!!! We took the scenic drive through the Black Hills National Forest stopping at Mount Rushmore. We drove the 14 mile Needles Highway(needle like granite formations),the Wildlife Loop Road(meadows with herds of bison, wild turkeys,
deer, etc),Custer State Park and Iron Mountain Road with one vehicle tunnels and perilous pig-tail bridges-- 25 mph-- scary but absolutely beautiful. In the evening we took the KOA shuttle to Mount Rushmore (5mi away). We saw pronghorn sheep. We watched the awe-inspiring lighting of Mount Rushmore Memorial. Cool 16 Deg. C. today.
Sept 9th
We drove north 50 miles to Sturgis and toured the Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame.
Sturgis(pop 6,000)is the home to the largest motorcycle rally in August(over 500,000 bikers).
Very interesting. We went to Kevin Costner's Tatanka-Story of the Bison. Interpretive center , set for Dances with Wolves movie and life size display of bronze statues of 14 bison and 3Indian riders chasing the buffalo over a cliff. We strolled the Historic Main Street of Deadwood and took in the re-enactment of the Shooting of Wild Bill Hickok at the Old Style Saloon #10. It was like going back to the Old West.Lots of casinos and food buffets. We went to Mt. Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill and Calmity Jane are buried. It was raining off and on all day 6 Deg.C. The highest tides in the world(30 feet) are in the Bay of Fundy. We walked on the bottom of the ocean floor around the Flower Pot rocks, climbed over boulders, walked through arches in the huge boulders and onto the mud flats(the river running through this is the Chocolate River). At 5:30 pm we went by shuttle to the same area. The tide was coming in quickly. Dozens of kayaks were paddling through the area we had previously walked. Woh!A definite highlight! Nice campground and lovely evening for a campfire.
August 22nd
We drove another 4 hours to get to St Andrews by-the-Sea(historic resort town near NB and Maine border). We went through Fundy National Park,St John and the Reversing Falls and the coast line of southern NB. We got a campsite at Kiwanis Oceanfront Campground on the tip of the peninsula over looking the Bay of Fundy. The difference between low and high tide is amazing. We drove 30minutes away to St Stephens and went to the Ganong Chocolate Museum.
The first heart -shaped box and chicken bones candy were made here. We were almost sick after eating free samples of chocolates. We invited our camping neighbours Paul and Debbie to our campfire and watched the sunset on the Bay of Fundy. (beautiful)
We went for hair cuts in the am. Ralph $11.00 and Marie $18.00. Marie got her nails done at noon. We finally got internet connection and did our blog. We bumped into Ralph's cousin Cecil and wife Irene. We picked up a pizza and had supper with Mom,Rob and Barb. Sad to say good bye to them. Later we said our good byes to Cindy,Bonnie and family.

PEI August 15th and 16th
August 15th
We drove the Blue Heron Coastal Drive on the north side of PEI . We stopped at all the famous PEI beaches along the way-Dalvey,Cove Head,Brackley,Stanhope and Cavendish. We walked the beaches and dipped our feet in the Atlantic,a bit cold for swimming. The beaches are beautiful --fine red sand with surrounding sand dunes and red cliffs. At Brackley,we bumped into a former Esso worker Chris Wilkes from Calgary. We browsed through craft stores and The Toy Factory(wooden toys made on PEI) . In the evening we visited Rob,Barb and Mom.
August 16th
Our truck needed a oil change in the am. We drove to Summerside and had a nice visit and lunch with Marcia MacFarland. (worked 38 years ago with her at Summerside hospital).
She made Scottish Meat Pie and biscuits.(very tasty) .After we got back we had a afternoon nap (feeling very exhausted) .In the evening we picked up Mom and went to Sandland. Sandland is a exhibition of sand castles and sculptures depicting Island history(made from PEI red soil).Beautiful. Finished off the evening with Cows Icecream.

PEI August 7th&8th
August 7th
Travelled almost 13 thousand kms so far. I did a bunch of laundry at Mom's seniors appartment this morning. Cloudy but came out nice later. We bought some lobsters, cooked them at our campsite and had Mom for supper. Tasty!!! Ralph's cousin Velda and Fred stopped by. Had to go outside to get connected to the internet but got eaten alive by mosquitos.
August 8th
Beautiful morning at 23 Deg C . We left at 10:30 am and got back at 8 pm. We drove to western PEI and then to the North. There is alot of PEI we haven't seen and it is bigger than we thought. We toured around Lennox Island(your namesake Rob and Genie)-Native Micmac Indians live here. We toured The Potato Museum in O'Leary and went to the very northern tip of PEI -North Cape. The red cliffs, the lighthouse and windmills generating power were impressive. By the time we got back it was raining heavy. We decided to go to the Old Dublin Pub,Charlottetown for Irish music and dinner. We stayed up till 12:30 a.m. doing our blog. It has been hit and miss to get on the internet. Poor coverage in this area of the campground. (due to electrical storms affecting the system on PEI).

Farewell NFLD------Hello Nova Scotia
July 23rd
Early rising 4:30 a.m. Our 8a.m. ferry from Port aux Basques,NFLD to North Sydney,N.S. delayed for 1 hour. All vehicles are inspected prior to leaving NFLD for disease carried by potatoes, burlap and plants(handed over my potatoes). Beautiful sunny calm sailing. Enjoyed music and movies on board ferry. My neck is peppered with black fly bites from Gros Morne. In the evening we visited nieces' Bonnie andHeather and all their families in Glace Bay ,1 hour away from our campsite. Diesel in NFLD was as high as $1.149 per litre. We have now travelled over 10,500 kms.Woh,what great memories!!
July24th
Beautiful and sunny 32 deg.c .We toured the Fortress of Louisburg for 5 hours. We visited the Fort 22 years ago. One-fifth of the original Louisburg has been reconstructed with costumed animators re-enacting life in 1744. We had lunch with only a pewter bowl and spoon . The homemade bread definitely stuck to your ribs(it was so heavy!!!!) We were very happy to re-visit the site. Bonnie and Allie visited our campsite in the evening. Good to have a phone call from all our friends vacationing in Loon Lake ,Washington. Have a great holiday. We miss you.

Gros Morne July 19th-22nd
July 20th
Forgot to mention that I discovered I was missing my wallet in the morning of July19th. It was found by the Oceanview Motel night watchman in the pub. Probably fell out of my purse. Very relieved to have it back!!!! He deserved a good reward.
Miserable rainy day. Finally checked e-mails and did blog and laundry. John and Sherryl invited us for dinner-delicious Louisanna chicken and sausage gumbo. We enjoyed another evening of Anchors Aweigh band until 1 a.m. I kept a close eye on my wallet.
July 21th
Foggy and raining cats and dogs. I got a good hair cut and blow dry for $16.00, cheapest ever.
We toured around the area with John and Sherryl and went on I'se da Bye boat tour of Bonne Bay. We saw minkie whales and bald eagles as well as beautiful scenery. Music and a screech in were part of the tour.
A shuttle bus picked us up at the campground for a hour long drive to Gros Morne Theater in Cows Head. Play "Double Axe Murder" was good.Glad we were not driving our vehicle back on the windy, foggy ,rainy shore road . Hitting a moose was a possibility.
July 22nd
After 3 days of rain we were able to go on the Western Brook Pond Boat tour. Up at 5 am and off for a 20 minute drive north and a 1 hour hike on gravel path and boardwalk over a bog to meet the boat tour. Western Brook Pond Fjord was carved by glaciers billions of years ago. It's 16 km lake is Gros Morne's largest lake. Outstanding sceneryand worth waiting to see. Left KOA at 2 pm and arrived at Doyles at 6 pm.
Finally we saw our first moose (they say " 8 moose per square km"in Gros Morne). Sunny day 24 Deg. C.. Went for a Jiggs Nfld dinner. Having a campfire tonight. Off to catch the ferry to North Sydney at 8 am and will be up by 5am.Newfoundland has been wonderful-the people, the scenery, the food, the music,etc,etc.-we"ll come back someday.

NFLD Gros Morne National Park
July 18th
Left Pippy Park at 6:45 am and on our way across the province again. Straight highways over green hills and beautiful landscape. Many rivers and lakes with lots of lupins and other flowers.
Hot 28 Deg C. More mountains as we get to the western region. We entered the Gros Morne National Park and stayed in Rocky Harbour. Amazing scenery. Enjoyed Moose soup and went to a evening performance of Anchors Aweigh band at a local hotel (Ocean View Hotel). Had a great evening of NFLD music,a couple of beers and several glasses of Screech. We walked back to our campsite at 2 am.
July 19th
Packed up and went to Gros Morne KOA at Norris Point for three days. Started to rain.
Lots of craft shops and restaurants in Norris Point and Rocky Harbour. (pretty towns on Bonne Bay). John and Sherryl arrived at KOA this afternoon and are camping beside us.
We joined them for dinner and enjoyed Newfie music in a lounge afterwards.

Cape Breton to NFLD
Sorry for the delay in updating the blog.
No internet connection since July 10th.
July11th
Ralph and I were off to Glace Bay and Cape Breton's Coalminers' Museum. We went into the Oceans Deeps Colliery with tunnels and shafts 4 feet high at times. Cold and damp but extremely interesting tour. Visited Bonnie and Allie in their new home with a swimming pool.
July12th
A memorable 38th wedding anniversary. We were at the North Sydney-NFLD Ferry terminal by 6:30 am. for the 6 hour crossing(8am to 2 pm) .Very foggy. Large ferry with transport trucks and RV's. Time passed by quickly with a movie and Newfoundland singers in the lounge. Bugs and Debby Green were talented musicans. Arrived on "the rock" at 2:30 pm NFLD time.
Foggy and high winds in Wreck House. Set up campsite in the Grand Codroy Valley.Pretty valley with quaint fishing villages. Sampled Cod Tongues(not bad). Enjoyed local NFLD entertainment at our campground with music, dancing and a Screech-in.
July 13th
Left western NFLD and drove through Stephenville,Cornerbrook (situated on a beautiful lake overlooking Marble Mountain Ski Hill)and stayed in central NFLD at Grand Falls-Windsor. Foggy but warm. Excellent highways through the Long Range Mountains, forrest, and lots of "ponds". We had to be vigilant for moose on the highway. Listened to Newfie music and had drinks with Gary and Peggy from St. John's (Torbay).
July14th
Beautiful campsite along the Exploits River(longest river in NFLD with lots of Atlantic salmon)
Toured the area and visited the Salmonide Interpretation Centre and Grand "falls". Visited Bob Hobbs Jr. in Bishop Falls. 27Deg C and humid today.
July15th
Heading off to St John's through picturesque country-valleys, mountains,"ponds",bays, ocean, and barren rocky land. We camped in CA Pippy Park-large treed park in the middle of St John's. When we were visiting the Fluvarium we were surprised to meet up with John and Sherryl from Louisanna. We enjoyed a evening campfire with them.
July16th
Beautiful in the a.m. We drove the Irish Scenic Route to Ferryland along the east coast. It was cold, foggy and raining when we arrived at Ferryland. At Bay Bulls we took a boat cruise to see the humpback whales, birds and Puffins. We saw thousands of Puffins nesting in burrowes on Bird Island. Coming back to St John's the countryside had marshlands, bogs, lakes and large boulders in the fields. In the evening we took a taxi with John and Sherryl to old St John's. George Street has the highest number of pubs and restaurants per sq inch in North America. We enjoyed a fun evening at O'Reilly's Pub. Pan fried cod ,local beer and Newfie music.
July 17th
Drove north along the coast line to beautiful fishing villages-Logy Bay,Torbay,Portugal Cove and St. Phillips in the morning. A van picked us up at Pippy Park for a 4 hour tour-old historic St. John's,jellybean row houses,St John's Bay,the Narrows(provides natural protection from the ocean and invaders),Signal Hill(first transatalntic wireless communication by Marconi),Cabot Tower(John Cabot landed in 1496) and the most easternly tip of North America (Cape Spear).
The views from Signal Hill and Cape Spear were spectular. Quidi Vidi is a very interesting old fishing village. The homes are built on stilts and only accessible by boat. We had delicious NFLD pea soup, seafood chowder and scallops at Velma's Place.(restaurant) St John's is a very beautiful city but difficult to drive in -long roads change names and many intersecting roads.
